Overseas Market Exceeds Expectations: The Globalization Journey of Chinese Construction Machinery Enterprises

Release time:

Global infrastructure construction and mineral development have driven higher-than-expected overseas demand for construction machinery, reshaping the global industrial landscape. Traditional giants such as Caterpillar and Komatsu maintain their basic market share in mature markets yet face fierce competition from Chinese brands in emerging markets. Going global has become the most important growth driver for domestic construction machinery enterprises.

Caterpillar: Revenue beats expectations with notable demand recovery in the Americas. Its construction segment revenue reached USD 8.346 billion in 2Q26, a year-on-year increase of 35%. Total user sales rose for the sixth consecutive quarter by 22%, and dealer inventories increased by USD 400 million. The construction segment posted a profit of USD 1.947 billion in 2Q26, up 57% year-on-year. Resources segment revenue stood at USD 4.648 billion in 2Q26, a year-on-year rise of 20%, with segment profit of USD 693 million, growing 23% year-on-year. Supported by a high order backlog, the company expects full-year user sales to maintain growth. By region, North America and Latin America show strong recovery.

Komatsu: Solid revenue growth and raised full-year guidance. Construction equipment business revenue hit JPY 502.6 billion, representing a 15.3% year-on-year increase, or 5.3% after excluding exchange rate impacts. Africa, Oceania, the Americas and Europe delivered strong performance. Mining business revenue reached JPY 462.4 billion, up 13.8% year-on-year, or 2% after stripping out currency effects. The company upgraded its sales forecast for seven core products under the Construction, Mining and Utility division from the previously estimated -5%0% in April 2026 to 0%5% growth.

Leading domestic manufacturers report outstanding overseas performance. Sany Heavy Industry, XCMG Construction Machinery and Zoomlion keep expanding overseas revenue, whose proportion generally approaches or exceeds half of their total revenue. Large volumes of excavators, cranes and concrete machinery are exported continuously. 100-tonne mining trucks and large-tonnage mining excavators have been deployed in overseas projects, and electrified equipment has emerged as a new export growth engine. LiuGong, Shantui, Zhejiang Dingli and other enterprises have built overseas advantages in niche segments, and the product portfolio of domestic equipment keeps improving.

Behind the robust export figures, we should clearly recognize that going global is not merely selling products overseas. Multiple challenges remain to be addressed to achieve high-quality globalization.

First, deliver localized R&D and product adaptation. Emission regulations and working conditions vary widely across regions. High-temperature, frigid and sandy environments impose stringent requirements on equipment reliability. Enterprises need to carry out customized product development for target markets, strengthen electrification and intelligent technologies, move away from low-price competition and shift toward value-based competition.

Second, build end-to-end localized capabilities. Establish assembly bases, R&D facilities and spare parts warehouses in key regions, and set up local service teams to remedy shortcomings in after-sales support overseas. Upgrading from trade-based exports to industrial overseas deployment can effectively hedge trade barriers, shorten delivery cycles and improve customer retention.

Third, optimize channel systems and value local partners. Adopt a hybrid "agency + direct sales" model, empower local distributors and leverage local channel resources to cover small and medium customers as well as large engineering projects. Meanwhile, actively participate in the formulation of international standards, build brand reputation through benchmark projects, change stereotyped perceptions and break into high-end European and American markets.

Transform into comprehensive service providers and develop the aftermarket. Overseas customers attach greater importance to the total life-cycle cost of equipment. Enterprises should expand financial leasing, maintenance and remanufacturing businesses, shifting from hardware sales to integrated solution provision. Conduct concurrent assessment of geopolitical, foreign exchange and legal risks to safeguard operational security.

Higher-than-expected overseas demand brings historic opportunities for China's construction machinery sector, yet globalization is a long marathon. Chinese construction machinery players have achieved breakthroughs in production scale. Future competition will focus on comprehensive strengths including technological capability, localized operation, brand influence and aftermarket ecosystem. Only by continuously polishing products, rooting in local markets and building a complete global operation system can domestic enterprises compete head-to-head with international giants in the global market and truly grow into a formidable force in the construction machinery industry.
